Second Grade

 Students who enter second grade should be able to read at a beginning level, write sentences, and solve basic addition and subtraction problems. They should have already learned:

* letter sounds (including short and long vowels)
* read common sight words, word families, word endings
* count from 1-999
* understand the concept of zero and write numbers with it
* understand the terms more and less
* count by 2s, 5s and 10s
* count coins

During second grade students will learn how to read more complex material, become more at ease with writing stories, understand place value and number relationships in addition and subtraction. They will become proficient at:

* reading words with more difficult spelling patterns
* learning the rules of syllabication
* understanding the meanings of prefixes and suffixes
* understanding antonyms and synonyms
* paragraph writing with correct capitalization and capitalization
* adding and subtracting three digit numbers
* beginning to memorize multiplication facts
* measuring the length of objects
* telling time to the quarter hour
* describing and classifying geometric shapes
